The Leavenworth
area includes a wide variety of habitats, each hosting different kinds
of birds. Look for Clark's nutcrackers and mountain chickadees in high
alpine forests, white-headed woodpeckers and chipping sparrows in the
ponderosa pines, and western meadowlarks in the eastern sagebrush-covered
hills. You will find different species of birds in each season of the
year. Why aren't the birds in alphabetical order? Lists of birds are
usually in phylogenetic order. The most primitive species, such as loons,
are listed first. More advanced species, like songbirds, are at the end
of the list. Most bird field guides are set up this way.
