In the first year of the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest, a field trip of 12 people walked quietly through the new aspen growth along the slopes of Mount Cashmere in the 2001 Icicle forest fire.  The bird count on this trip was 32 species.  New birders and experienced birders alike were delighted by birds coming such distances.  The calliope hummingbird from as far as Mexico, western tanager – Costa Rica, Vaux's swift - Venezuala, and turkey vulture - Argentina.  Making the connection between where these small winged ambassadors spend their winters, then in springtime return to greet Washington State birders were USFS guides Heather Murphy wildlife biologist, RoseMarie Martinez, Forest Service Dispatcher/GIS specialist and Patrick Murphy, GIS analysist. 

En el primero año del Festival Primaveral de las Aves en Leavenworth, 2001, un grupo de 12 personas salió a campo y caminó discretamente por un bosque de álamos (Populus tremuloides). Eran las laderas del monte Cashmere, una zona que había sido devastada por el incendio del río Icicle. Se contaron 32 especies de aves en ese viaje. Tanto los nuevos observadores de aves como los experimentados quedaron encantados de ver especies que venían de muy lejos: el colibrí calliope desde México, la tángara de capucha roja desde Costa Rica, el vencejo de Vaux desde Venezuela y el zopilote aura desde Argentina haciendo una conexión entre sus sitios de hivernación y los de veraneo. Esta primavera ya están llegando al estado de Washington donde observadores de aves como los guías Heather Murphy, bióloga de especies silvestres del USFS, RoseMarie Martinez, despachadora y especialista en SIG del USFS, y Patrick Murphy, especialista en SIG les dan la bienvenida.

RoseMarie brought a fresh twist for local birders, the Spanish name translations of birds seen (see box).  The group found names in Spanish often made more sense than the English names, such as Townsend’s Warbler is Reinita Negriamarilla, meaning “ little black-yellow queen.”  The Rufous Hummingbird is Zumbador Rufo, meaning “red buzzer.”  Even the most common of birds such as American Robin and Mallard duck have a clever bilingual depiction.  The robin is Zorzal Pechirrojo, meaning “red-breasted thrush” and the mallard is Pato de Collar, meaning “necklaced duck.”  This year, whether you watch birds in your backyard or on National Forest lands, bear in mind the miles these “bundles of feathered joy” travel to reach our neck of the woods from all over the Americas - and share with your friends.

Hemos descubierto que frecuentemente los nombres en español tienen más sentido que los nombres en inglés. El Rufous Hummingbird es conocido como  Zumbador Rufo, el American Robin como Zorzal Pechirrojo y el Mallard duck como  Pato de Collar.
